A fake Twitter account claiming to be the new BBC director general managed to gain thousands of followers in just a few hours after it appeared on the social networking site.
The parody account was opened shortly after Hall was named as the new BBC director general yesterday afternoon.
After just eight Tweets @TonyHallBBCDG had garnered 1300 followers, and at last count boasted 3357 followers on the site.
The author of the account is as of yet unknown, though speculation has suggested it could be a BBC insider.
The account's biography read: "I’m the man to take us out of this s**t. Views aren’t of the BBC (although I run the bloody thing LOL?!)," and used an old picture of Hall as its avatar.
The first Tweet sent from the account was re-tweeted some 120 times and read: "The account’s first tweet read: “Right, let’s not f*** about, someone get me a flat white and a PA, this s**t’s about to get serious”. It was followed by a second Tweet stating: "Text message from Entwhistle: ‘Good luck, Tony, see if you can get out by Christmas’”.
