Google releases native Maps app for iPhone

iPhone owners can today come in from the wilderness after Google published its native Maps app on the Apple store, meaning owners of the smartphone can now navigate their way around the world with a degree of confidence.

It follows months of embarrassment for Apple owing to numerous failings in their own custom Maps app, which included leading people miles off course into the middle of an arid desert.

Google’s software had previously been the default location app on the iPhone and the new free app restores that lost functionality as well as some new tricks such as voice guided turn-by-turn directions, indoor panoramas, 3d overlays and vector based graphics.

Android users still get the better deal however as a number of features, such as indoor maps, downloadable maps and voice search are only available on their software.

This time round though Google faces stiff competition, if not from Apple, but from Nokia which has released its own free mapping tool.
