Radio Times poll votes BBC's Sherlock top TV show of 2012

BBC1's modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock has been voted the top TV show of 2012 by writers and critics in a Radio Times poll.

Sherlock beat off stiff competition from US thriller Homeland which took second place.

BBC2 mockumentary Twenty Twelve, starring Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes, was voted third with fellow BBC2 series The Thick of It placing fourth.

Tim Glanfield editor of RadioTimes.com called Sherlock "the TV event of the year with three perfect episodes".

Glanfield added: "Nothing got people talking more than that cliffhanger series finale."
