Google reports that tax controversy did not lead to reduced UK users

Google’s UK chief yesterday told a conference that the recent controversy about the tax levels that the search engine pays has not led to a decrease in users.

Dan Cobley, managing director in the UK and Ireland, insisted that the company does pay all the taxes it requires, although it was revealed last year that the site paid £6m corporation tax, on £2.5bn UK profits.

He said: “Based on metrics that we’ve seen, we haven’t seen a major shift over the last little while.”

Cobley added that Google thinks the most important thing for it to keep customers loyal is “to keep innovating and creating products”.
