New file upload service, Mega, has been launched by internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom as a successor to the Megaupload website which was shut down by US authorities last year.
The Mega site has already gone live, with Dotcom later tweeting: "100,000 registered users in less than 1 hour. Fastest growing startup in Internet history? #Mega."
The site struggled to cope as more people attempted to join, with Dotcom telling Twitter followers: "If you are currently experiencing slow access to #Mega its because of the unbelievable demand. We are working on more capacity."
Mega is set to offer users 50GB of free cloud storage, rivaling other sites such as Dropbox and SkyDrive
Dotcom is currently in New Zealand on bail and fighting extradition to the US after he was charged with offences including piracy and racketeering in association with his Megaupload site.
Under the terms of his bail, Dotcom agreed that he would not attempt to rebuild or recreate Megaupload. However, his lawyers argue that he has the right to make a living and insist this new venture is legitimate.
