Court lifts ban on naming Jeremy Forrest following challenge from ten media organisations

The decision to ban media organisations from naming Jeremy Forrest, who is appearing in court on child abduction charges, has been overturned by Hastings magistrate court after ten media organisations came together to challenge the order.

The ruling had made it impossible to name the 30-year-old secondary school teacher, who has was widely known following the public search for him and the 15 year-old school pupil he took to France.

Following Forrest’s arrest, the Eastbourne magistrates court enforced the ban which prevented the press directly naming him, resulting in vague headlines such as "Man in East Sussex court on child abduction charge" from the BBC.

However the BBC and ITN, local newspaper group Newsquest – and the publishers of the Guardian, the Daily Mail, the Daily Mirror, the Sun, the Daily Telegraph, the Independent, the Evening Standard and the Times came together to successfully challenge to court ruling.
