Marks & Spencer trials mobile payment app in its coffee shops

Marks & Spencer is preparing to trial a new app that will let customers pay for their goods in store with their phones.

Marks & Spencer will initially use the system in select M&S coffee shops, where menus will be compatible with the new app Paddle, which allows users to pay by scanning a code with the phone's camera. Customers will be able to choose and buy items from their table.

However, if the Paddle is successful the retail giant will consider rolling it out across its stores.

The trial comes from Mark & Spencer's Digital Lab, a division started in February to explore how the company can use new technologies.

Kyle McGinn, head of the Digital Lab, told the Independent: "We like customers thinking Marks & Spencer are pushing innovation."
