Replacement: The Sun on Sunday launched after NOTW closure

The Sun on Sunday is to raise its price from 50p to 60p from Sunday, the Guardian has reported, in the latest of a series of recent financial announcements from News International.

According to The Guardian, the paper will increase its cover price having been launched by News International last year after the closure of the News of the World, amid phone hacking allegations.

The news comes just days after the company announced the introduction of a paywall for The Sun website, to take effect in the second half of 2013, and an agreement worth £10m with Johnston Press for the newspaper publisher to terminate its printing contract with News International.

The paywall introduction led to a mixed reaction from media buyers.

The Saturday Sun, which was reduced to 50p when the News of the World replacement was launched last February, will also return to its original price of 60p. Recent figures revealed the Sun on Sunday recorded a year-on-year sales fall of 40.48 per cent in its first year.

A spokesman for News International confirmed the price rise, telling The Drum: "That is correct and the price of the Saturday edition of The Sun will also be increasing to 60p."
