Wikileaks publish fresh tranche of US diplomatic cables

Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder who remains holed up in Ecuador’s London embassy, has published a fresh tranche of 1.7m US diplomatic and intelligence reports dating from 1973 to 1976.

The historic communications cover global cables, congressional correspondence and intelligence reports which it describes as the world’s largest searchable collection of confidential, or formerly confidential, diplomatic communications.

Assange, who has been trapped in the embassy since last June, is believed to have done much of the work himself noting that haul is far bigger than the 250,000 documents published by Wikileaks between 2010 and 2011.

This latest collection of archive material was not leaked, it is all available in the US national archives, but has merely been analysed and collated by the organisation before presenting it in searchable form.

Top secret documents are not included in the haul whilst other files are now unreadable after becoming corrupted.
