Music discovery service We Are Hunted has confirmed reports that it has been bought by Twitter, further fuelling rumours that Twitter is developing a new music app.
A statement posted on the We Are Hunted site last night titled “Hunted Joins Twitter!” explains “While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team.”
We Are Hunted thank its board and investors “particularly Graeme Wood, who backed us in late 2007 and never stopped supporting and mentoring us” and also the users “who kept coming back each day to discover the great new music”.
The post adds that “Twitter and music go well together” and that We Are Hunted “We can't wait to share what we've been working on at Twitter”. Users of We Are Hunted are informed that their accounts will be shut down as the website is closing for good as part of the acquisition.
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest appeared to confirm Twitter’s move into music via his Twitter feed writing “playing with @twitter’s new music app (yes it’s real!)…there’s a serious dance party happening at idol right now” (sic).
The app is believed to focus on what artists are trending as well as featuring up and coming bands and musicians.
