The Daily Mirror has become the latest red top to become ensnared in the phone hacking row after Sven-Goran Eriksson and David & Victoria Beckham claimed that they had been targeted by the paper.
They comprise a group of celebrities, who also include Coronation Street actress Shobna Gulati and Ex-Blackburn Rovers captain Garry Flitcroft, to launch legal action against the title alleging ‘breach of confidence and misuse of information’ by the title when Piers Morgan was editor.
Previously Morgan had appeared before the Leveson Inquiry into press standards to flatly deny that phone hacking ever took place under his watch at the Mirror, saying “Not a single person has made any formal or legal complaint against the Daily Mirror for phone hacking.
The claims also encompass the Sunday Mirror and the People, both also published by Mirror Group Newspapers.
The newspaper is the first outside of News International's titles such as the now defunct News of the World, to be named in a legal row over phone hacking.
The publisher declined to comment.
