LinkedIn brings ads to mobile apps with new update

Social networking site LinkedIn has released an update to its iPhone and Android apps which offers users a personalised activity stream, improved navigation and the introduction of adverts.

Mobile is the fastest growing strand of the site with an ever increasing proportion of LinkedIn’s 200m members accessing the site from their phones, allowing the site to introduce sponsored content to people’s streams.

It is the first big update to the apps in almost two years, when the apps first launched, allowing a new more modern look to be implemented with bigger, less statically placed images and algorithms to filter information for the individual.

Improved navigation has also been implemented with the ‘in’ icon now doubling up as a notification signal for pending messages and new menu of options for accessing different functions.

Kiran Prasad, LinkedIn’s head of mobile engineering, said: “We were seeing that people are engaging a lot more on mobile, and so we wanted to make the experience more efficient. That meant moving away from an HTML5-based app and to more of a native app experience.”
