Veteran TV presenter Philip Schofield has clung on to his job at ITV’s This Morning despite receiving a reprimand from management for a stunt in which he handed a list of alleged Conservative paedophiles to Prime Minister David Cameron live on air.

Peter Fincham, ITVs director of television, confirmed that the broadcaster had received a legal letter from a firm acting on behalf of Lord McAlpine over the incident and had already initiated ‘appropriate disciplinary action’ against Schofield and four production staff.

Fincham declined to elaborate upon the nature of this action however.

“The way that This Morning interviewed the prime minister last Thursday, or that portion of the interview, was wrong. It was misguided”, said Fincham. Adding: “"In live television, all sorts of things can happen. That doesn't mean they should.

"I'm not happy that this happened. We have editorial processes and checks in place and to be honest with you they weren't followed."

Ofcom has confirmed it is to investigate both ITV and the BBC over the whole affair.
