Performance marketing network Affiliate Window has drawn upon its network’s data regarding Black Friday and Cyber Monday to track sales figures, peak times, types of sales and devices used.
Traditionally American terms used to describe the first Friday after Thanksgiving and the first Monday after Thanksgiving the terms have crossed over into the UK, though for Britons it’s the following Monday (which fell on Monday 3 December this year) that we keep our eye on.
The data has been compiled into an infographic (shown below) which reveals that Cyber Monday (also known as Mega Monday and Manic Monday) was indeed the biggest UK online shopping day of the year so far.
British internet users made 112 million retail website visits last Monday setting a new record for the most time spend shopping online in a single day with 15 million hours spend on retail sites – roughly around the same amount of time it took to build The Great Wall of China.
Most online transactions took place between the hours of 9 and 10 pm. Activity was lowest between 2 and 7am as most Brits were still asleep, there was a sales peak between 12 and 1pm during lunch breaks with activity ramping up after 5pm when most people finished work.
Online department stores generated the most sales with a 21 per cent share, followed by entertainment stores at 17 per cent, and fashion retail stores at 16 per cent. Over recent years mobile and tablet devices have become increasingly popular for internet shopping, though Affiliate Window stats show most people (86 per cent) still prefer to use desktop computers.
