A Labour politician has branded a Conservative advertising campaign which contrasts ‘hardworking families’ with those who ‘don’t work’ as contemptuous of the unemployed.
The online banner campaign, launched in 60 marginal constituencies, contrasts a happy nuclear family against an illustration of a man slumped on the sofa alongside the message ‘Who do you think the government should be giving help to?’
Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East said of the campaign. "To deliberately mislead people in this way is not only dishonest; it is also offensive to all those hard-working families who make up the majority of the people the government is choosing to hit."
Pollsters predict that clamping down on the work-shy will prove to be a vote winner for the Conservatives.
