Vine users now have to confirm they are over 17

Twitter’s video clip sharing app Vine has had its age rating increased to the highest option on Apple’s App Store – 17+.

The move follows complaints that some of its six-second video clips carried pornographic images, taking its rating up from 12+.

The app had made headlines after an ‘Editor’s Pick’ showed a couple engaged in a sexual act, the clip soon made it into the app’s ‘popular now’ section with Twitter later apologised blaming human error.

Technology news site The Verge first reported the change in Vine’s status early this morning.

In recent weeks Apple has also removed photo-sharing service 500px from its App Store amid complaints of pornographic images, before allowing it to return with a 17+ rating.

As well as carrying a new age rating the Vine update includes minor bug fixes, Facebook and Twitter sharing options, and functionality to report or block users. The app also now warns of age-restricted material and asks for confirmation that the user is over 17.
