User removes purported image of child killer Jon Venables from Twitter

A photograph which ,a href="http://www.thedrum.com/news/2013/02/14/investigation-launched-alleged-tw...">sparked an investigation by the attorney general, into a possible breach of an injunction banning publication of any material which may hint at his new identity, has been removed from Twitter.

The pic, which was retweeted hundreds of times, purported to show the killer of toddler James Bulger, as he looks today –potentially imperiling his new given identity.

A spokesman for the attorney general said: “The AGO has been alerted to a possible contempt of court. We are liaising with the ministry of justice and others to establish the facts.

"We can neither confirm nor deny whether the pictures in question are of Jon Venables. It should be noted there is a worldwide injunction in place which prevents the publication of any images or information purporting to identify anyone as Jon Venables."

Venables was convicted of killing the toddler James Bulger along with his friend Robert Thompson and was given a new identity after being released from prison in 2001. He was jailed again in 2010 for downloading and distributing images of children and a worldwide ban on publishing anything which could identify him remains in force.
