Assange to stand in Australian elections to evade extradition

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s latest ruse to escape the clutches of the British and Swedish judicial systems has seen him form the ‘WikiLeaks Party’ as he seeks to be elected to Australia’s upper house.

Assange believes that his appointment as an Australian senator would stymie US and British efforts to dislodge him from his bolt hole in the Ecuadorian Embassy, London, due to the added diplomatic sensitivities such a title would bestow.

Senate elections take place in Australia on 24 September and Assange has already registered himself in the state of Victoria electoral roll to facilitate his political ambitions.

Should Assange be successful in attaining office his six year term would commence on 1 July 2014, although he has conceded he may have to call upon a stand-in to take the seat if he remains indisposed.
