Gov.uk named Design of the Year

The government’s new one-stop-shop web portal for all services and functions has been named Design of the Year by the Design Museum.

Designed in-house by the government’s own digital service the platform supplants a previously confusing picture of multiple domains and pages for a clearer unified look.

In a unanimous decision judges plumped for the site over 97 competing entries across the fields of fashion, furniture and architecture owing to its ‘well thought out’ layout and ‘understated’ look’.

Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic lauded the site as "the Paul Smith of websites", saying: "It makes life better for millions of people coping with the everyday chores, from getting a new passport, to paying their taxes.

"Gov.uk looks elegant, and subtly British thanks to a revised version of a classic typeface, designed by Margaret Calvert back in the 1960s.”

Prime Minister David Cameron has hailed the website as enhancing ‘the modern relationship between the public and government.’

The website and other shortlisted work will be on display at the Design Museum, London, until 7 July.
