Porn clampdown to see blocks installed on public WiFi

The government has announced a fresh clampdown on internet pornography by blocking explicit content from areas served by public WiFi services.

Designed to reduce the risk of children accessing such in cafes or town centres the measure is being championed by the Prime Minister who is calling for ‘good, clean Wi-Fi’.

This follows campaigning from children’s charities who have long urged a blanket ban in public areas although it is not yet clear if the onus of responsibility will rest with internet firms or individual WiFi owners.

David Cameron said: “We are promoting good, clean, WiFi in local cafes and elsewhere to make sure that people have confidence in public WiFi systems so that they are not going to see things they shouldn’t.”

Both the NSPCC and the Children’s Society have welcomed the measure.
