An opinion poll conducted amidst moves to introduce a new system of press regulation in the UK post-Leveson has found that more than two thirds oppose any influence from politicians in establishing new rules backed by Royal Charter.
67 per cent of those asked concurred with a statement that any regulatory system should be set up ‘in a way that does not give politicians the final say if and when changes need to be made’, giving ammunition to the newspaper industry which is opposing the government’s plans.
Conducted by Survation the poll found just 16 per cent support amongst the public for politicians to be given a say with the majority (76 per cent) calling for a public consultation so people can have their say.
Damian Lyons Lowe, of Survation said: “The public are clear that a new system of tough, industry-financed press regulation is desired."
