The irritating operatic ditty that blares from Go Compare’s series of television ads has defied its detractors by contributing to a healthy £10m in fees for songwriters whose work features in advertisements.
According to the Performing Rights Society larger than life crooner Go Compario’s incessant warbling of the classic track, Over There by George Cohan, has pushed it into being the most played song in UK TV and radio advertising last year.
This feat edged out arch-rivals confused.com, whose usurping of YMCA by the Village People was left languishing in second place.
Last year songwriters, composers and music publishers earned a combined £641.8m in royalties.
