Sir Alex Ferguson is to step down and Manchester United manager

Almost half (48 per cent) of social media users discussing Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement from Manchester United are pleased with the news that David Moyes will take up the mantle as United’s new manager.

Over the last few days Crimson Hexagon’s ForSight platform has analysed almost half a million (457,486) relevant Twitter and Facebook conversations to uncover the most discussed topics surrounding Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and news of his successor.

Jokes surrounding Ferguson’s retirement and career accounted for 19 per cent of all social media conversation surrounding Ferguson and 12 per cent of people discussing his decision to retire expressed their disappointment about his departure.

Though 48 per cent of social media discussions around the news were pleased with Moyes’ appointment eight per cent of users expressed anger and disapproval at Manchester United’s new manager. Seven per cent of discussions were tribute and praise for Ferguson’s monumental management career.

Surprisingly, one per cent of users were confused over the news mistaking Ferguson’s nickname ‘Fergie’ for the Black Eyed Peas lead singer of the same name.
