The Sun to introduce £2 per week ‘Sun+’ paywall from August

The Sun has reportedly settled on a £2 per week charge for users to access its online content from August following publisher News International’s decision to go down the paywall route.

The tabloids move to a transaction format puts it in line with its News International stablemates The Times and The Sunday Times, both of which have already implemented similar systems.

In an effort to sweeten the deal for its readers The Sun will offer Premier League football content, which includes internet and mobile highlights for which the paper has secured exclusive rights.

Branded Sun+ the new online brand will seek to establish a profitable revenue stream for the business in line with News International chief Mike Darcey’s belief that not charging for content is ‘untenable’.

In an email to staff Darcey said: “This move ensures that we will be offering a compelling, paid-for package across all of our titles, delivering great value for news that is worth paying for."
