Consumer awareness of contactless payment doubles as more retailers continue to invest

Awareness of contactless payment has more than doubled from 15 per cent to 39 per cent in 12 months according to latest Mobile Payment Index results from eDigitalResearch.

The figures include awareness of contactless mobile payment points and symbols, with eDigital stating it shows that, as more and more brands and businesses, as well as handset manufacturers, begin to invest in the technology, awareness amongst consumers is starting to grow.

The study also found that actual use of contactless mobile payments is also on the increase with over half (53 per cent) of those surveyed saying they now used their mobile to make a contactless payment purchase, compared to 47 per cent this time last year.

Spending via mobile NFC technology has grown considerably over the past twelve months and average spend per transaction now stands at £26.84.

The findings come amidst reports that some consumers have had issues with contactless payments when using cards. Customers at Marks and Spencer and Pret a Manger have found that cards within the vicinity of the contactless payment point have had money deducted despite the payment not being authorised.

M&S is amongst the leading retailers offering contactless payment, stating that “almost 250,000 transactions a week are now taking place in M&S stores on Contactless.”
