Journalists at Guardian News & Media, publisher of the Guardian and Observer newspapers, are expected to go on strike over planned job cuts after 400 of the 413 staff voted to hold a ballot over action.
A mere four staff voted against action, whilst nine abstained.
GNM is seeking to axe 100 staff in a bid to arrest escalating losses which have now hit £44m a year, but so far only 32 staff had come forward voluntarily – meaning the remainder will have to be compulsory.
The National Union of Journalists are presently deciding whether to recommend strike action as a result.
A GNM spokesperson said: “We need to save £7m from the editorial budget, and we continue to work closely with the NUJ to discuss how the necessary savings can be achieved. There are a number of options on the table. We of course hope to avoid any action.”
